PHILIP C. HAMM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS IN PLANT SCIENCES AND RELATED DISCIPLINES

Two nonrenewable scholarships of $1500 each are available to graduate students in the plant sciences and related disciplines from the Philip C. Hamm Memorial Scholarship Program. These are highly competitive awards and recipients usually are in the advanced stages of a PhD program, often with multiple refereed publications. To be eligible for nomination, a student must have:

1. Completed a minimum of one academic year in the University Of Minnesota Graduate academic year

2. Demonstrated promise as a research scientist through original research.  Preference will be given to graduate students who have made substantial progress on their thesis research, and generally to those in the last year of School.

3.  Registered during the current their programs.

Nominations must be submitted through the respective Director of Graduate Studies. At least one nomination per graduate program in plant sciences or related disciplines is encouraged. Large programs may nominate up to three people.

Nominations must include:

1. A personal statement of career objectives including your research experience and interest;

2. Curriculum vita documenting scholarly activities;

3. Transcripts of academic graduate work; and

4. Two letters of recommendation from faculty “providing evidence of promise as a research plant scientist.”

Submission of an original research publication to a professional journal in a plant science or related discipline is required.

The awards will be based entirely on merit in the plant sciences and the recipients will be recognized at the Philip C Hamm Memorial Lecture Tuesday, April 7, 2009.
