Research Focus
Stem rust of wheat caused major epidemics in the United States and Canada throughout the beginning of the twentieth century. Breeding for resistant varieties and the eradication of the alternate host of stem rust largely eliminated the threat of this pathogen. In 1999, a race of stem rust was detected in Uganda that is virulent on the vast majority of modern cultivars in the world. This new race, Ug99, has spread throughout Eastern Africa and recently into Yemen. I am assisting scientists at the USDA Cereal Disease Lab and at the Department of Plant Pathology in breeding resistant varieties of wheat to Ug99. Professional Experience
