Text of remarks by Professor M.S.Swaminathan, President, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences of India
Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, 1970 Nobel Peace
Prize Laureate and 2004 National Science Medal Recipient,
recognized as one of the most influential people of the 20th Century, was awarded the Congressional
Gold Medal July
17, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in the
Capital Rotunda. The award was
presented by
President Bush and Speaker of the House Nancy
Pelosi.
Only
five people in history have ever won the Nobel Peace Prize, the
Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal: Martin
Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Elie Wiesel ... and
Norman Borlaug.

Department of Plant Pathology’s upcoming celebration provides an
exceptional opportunity to document the legacy and continuing influence
of the department, its faculty, and alumni on the state of Minnesota
and the world. Do you
have photographs, correspondence, teaching material, bibliographies, or
other documents from your time in Plant Pathology? Do you have
departmental files in your possession? Professor
Richard Zeyen, chair of the Plan Pathology Centennial Committee, and
Elisabeth Kaplan, University Archivist, invite you to contact the
Archives to discuss a long-term preservation plan and the possible
donation of these historical materials to the University
Archives. The
University Archives’ mission is to provide long-term stewardship of the
historical documentation of the university, its faculty, staff, and
students. We are working together to ensure that the Plant Pathology
story, and the stories of the people who built the department, are
carefully preserved and available to future generations. For
