Research Focus

My research project involves the  study of Sharon goat grass (Aegilops sharonensis), a wild relative of wheat endemic from the  coastal areas of Israel and  southern Lebanon. Aegiolops sharonensis is a potential  source of useful genes for wheat improvement, and it is considered a threatened  species. It grows in the  most highly populated area of Israel,  where agriculture and urbanization are rapidly replacing its natural habitat.  The main objectives of my thesis are: 1) to evaluate a collection of Ae. sharonensis for resistance to seven  wheat fungal pathogens; 2) to determine the genetic basis of wheat leaf rust,  stem rust, and powdery mildew resistance in Ae.  sharonensis; 3) to generate the first genetic linkage map on the species  and to map the resistance genes to wheat leaf rust and stem rust; and 4) to  assess the phenotypic and genotypic diversity in Ae. sharonensis using SSR markers. My project is done in  cooperation with the Institute for Cereal Crops Improvement at the Tel Aviv  University, Israel.
