| Dr. Norman Borlaug, 1970 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, is the University of Minnesota’s most distinguished
alumnus. To honor the great lifetime
achievements of Dr. Borlaug and his continuing efforts to inspire young
scientists in agriculture and humanitarian causes, the Department of Plant
Pathology is establishing the Norman E. Borlaug Graduate Fellowship in
International Agriculture at the University
of Minnesota.
Dr. Brian J.
Steffenson, Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology, gave $1,000
to the University
of Minnesota Foundation
as an initial gift towards the establishment of the Norman E. Borlaug
Fellowship for International Agriculture.
Additional gifts will be solicited to bring this fund up to the level of
at least $25,000 where the endowment will be eligible for matching. This
gift will establish the Norman E. Borlaug Graduate Fellowship for International
Agriculture, an endowment fund that will provide financial support for graduate
fellowships in the Department of Plant Pathology in the College of Food,
Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences.
When fully endowed, the fellowship will provide a generous stipend
(equal to that of university graduate fellowships) to attract the best
applicants from around the world to the Department of Plant Pathology. Graduate fellows will conduct part of their
research and/or outreach and educational activities in an underdeveloped
country and obtain their degree from the Department. Other gifts may be contributed to the fund by
the donors, or by others, at any time.
