Research Focus
In 1999, a new race of stem rust (TTKS or Ug99) was detected in eastern Africa. Race Ug99 has raised serious concerns because it is highly virulent on a major portion of the wheat and barley cultivars grown across the world and is considered a threat to food security in developing countries. Improving wheat and barley for resistance to Ug99 and related races is an urgent need in order to avoid serious losses. My research will address the needs in identifying and utilizing resistance to Ug99 and its variants. |
