Melissa Lim, Plant Pathology M.S. Student was recently named winner of the best student poster at the Borlaug Global Rust Initiative's annual event held in Sydney, Australia.

Lim's poster was titled "Berberis holstii is functional as an alternate host of Puccinia graminis in Ethiopia."  The poster focused on describing research that evaluated Berberis holstii, a shrub native to East Africa, to discover if it is susceptible to the pathogen that causes stem rust and to see if the pathogen completes its sexual cycle in Ethiopia. This research surveyed this particular barberry species via inoculation experiments and DNA assays. Findings from this research will provide further insight into stem rust disease management and control in Ethiopia.
