Dean Herzfeld Named Fellow of the American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators

At its recent 2016 annual national meeting in Roanoke, VA, the American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators (AAPSE) named associate Extension professor Dean Herzfeld, Ph.D., as Fellow. This is the organization’s highest recognition and is bestowed on individuals from universities, federal, tribe, or state agencies, or non-governmental organizations for their superior service to AAPSE and national achievement in education, pesticide applicator certification, public service, research and personal achievement. Herzfeld is a P&A in the Department of Plant Pathology and has led the University of Minnesota Extension’s Pesticide Safety and Environmental Education program for 29 years. In selecting Herzfeld for this honor AAPSE noted Herzfeld:

·  Is the longest serving elected national officer with a total of nine years on AAPSE’s five-person national Executive Committee, including serving as AAPSE President

·  Has an extensive record in supporting the association’s work, hosting the 2013 national Pesticide Applicator Certification and Training workshop and furthering pesticide safety education in Minnesota and nationally

·  Has scholarship in bio, biomedical and public health ethics and their application to accountability for achieving publicly desirable educational outcomes in pesticide safety education curriculum development, instructional design and educational program ‘business plans.’

·  Had significant national impact on co-developing, with the U of MN’s Center for Farm Financial Management, an extension Pesticide Safety Education Program business plan template widely used by other states and his related mentoring a large number of programs in other states to achieve educational goals and program financial sustainability through partnering with external and internal stakeholders

·  Developed Minnesota’s program into one of the nation's leading programs by focusing on outcomes of human health and safety, environmental protection, pesticide security and enhancement of jobs and the economy

·  For national leadership in education on Integrated Pest Management, water quality, personal protective equipment, waste pesticides and pesticide containers, pesticide exposure health and safety, copyright for integrity in researched-based education, controversial issue education, educational manual design and adult learner-focused instructional design
