McDermott Joins University of Arizona
Alumna Mag McDermott (M.S. 2016) has joined the University of Arizona as a senior research specialist in the Valley Fever Center for Excellence. Valley fever disease, caused by the fungal pathogen Coccidioides spp. (immitis and posadasii) is a serious threat to both humans and dogs in its endemic range of southwest U.S. and northern Mexico. A non-virulent mutation of Coccidoides posadasii (∆cps1) has been created for use in a live vaccine, based originally on work identifying CPS1 as a virulence factor in the maize pathogen Cochliobolus heterostrophus. This project involves a concerted effort by experts in several biological science fields. Researchers from the plant pathology spectrum include Aneth Das, CBS, UMN, and Marc Orbach, Dept. of Plant Sciences, UA.
