Plant Pathology Hosts the 2016 NCAPS Meeting
Approximately 125 plant pathologists from across the Midwest convened in St. Paul earlier this month (June 7-9) as part of the American Phytopathological Society’s North Central (NCAPS) regional meeting. The University of Minnesota Department of Plant Pathology was proud to host! The three-day meeting featured workshops and field trips including a professional development workshop for students, a tour of the University of Minnesota and USDA-ARS Cereal Disease Laboratory rust research facilities, and a “Farm to Tap” tour that included visits to barley research plots, a hops farm, and a local microbrewery. The meeting also featured keynote presentations on plant phenomics by Dr. Chris Topp (Danforth Plant Science Center) and on the phytobiome by Dr. Gwyn Beattie (Iowa State University). Sixteen scientists contributed oral presentations and there were scores of poster presentations. The meeting also included an opening ceremony in the newly renovated Borlaug Commons and a closing awards ceremony and dinner. It was a great meeting with great science and opportunities for great interactions. Thanks to the organizing committee led by Professor and North Central APS President Angela Orshinsky, and to all who attended.
