Welcome to Professor Pablo Olivera Firpo

April 28, 2017
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Pablo Olivera Firpo to the Plant Pathology Faculty.  Pablo was appointed Research Assistant Professor beginning Monday, May 1.  Pablo's appointment is made following an extensive evaluation process by the Plant Pathology faculty and CFANS Deans.

As you may already know, Pablo completed his Ph.D. in Plant Pathology under Professor Brian Steffenson in 2008.  Since that time, Pablo has been a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department and the USDA-ARS Cereal Disease Lab, working with Professor Yue Jin.  As a postdoc, Pablo has played important roles in identifying, characterizing, and mapping wheat stem rust resistance genes effective against Ug99 and other pathogen races and in race typing rust isolates to monitor the origin and spread of new virulences.  Pablo has also led training programs that build international research capacity to work with rust pathogens and identify useful genetic resistance in wheat.  As a faculty member, Pablo will continue his research leadership in wheat stem rust.  While his appointment is a Research Assistant Professor, he is also eager to contribute to the student training mission of our department.
