Schilling Heads North
In January, Jonathan Schilling will assume the role of Director at the Itasca Biological Station & Laboratories at the University of Minnesota. He has been faculty at the University of Minnesota in CFANS the Department of Bioproducts & Biosystems Engineering (BBE) since 2006, and adjunct in Plant Pathology (PLPA) since 2007. He will remain adjunct in PLPA, but the new position home is in the Plant & Microbial Biology (PMB) department in the College of Biological Sciences.
His research group focuses on the mechanisms of wood-degrading fungi and the consequences of these mechanisms, as traits, in ecosystems. Itasca, Schilling says, has 25% of Minnesota's old growth forest cradling the headwaters of the Mississippi River - "if you know me, you'll know that this opportunity had my name all over it, along with my family. It's a place to tuck into wilderness, while leaving the cabin door open for other scientists."
