Establishment of the Dr. Yue Jin Fund for International Graduate Students in Plant Pathology
On Thursday, March 3rd the Department of Plant Pathology held a celebration for the establishment of the Dr. Yue Jin Fund for International Graduate Students in Plant Pathology. This fund was established by Dr. Yue Jin in 2015 to provide support for international graduate students in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences who are studying plant pathology and are in the United States on a temporary student visa.
Jin is a scientist with the USDA-ARS Cereal Disease Lab and has been an adjunct professor in Plant Pathology since 2003. He has had an amazingly productive and impactful research career since that time, with 126 publications since 2003. His work includes identification and mapping of disease resistance genes in wheat and barley, the development and release of disease resistant wheat varieties, population genetics of wheat rust pathogens and a significant body of research on UG99—the wheat stem rust pathogen that threatened most of the world’s wheat production. He is a well respected and broadly recognized international leader in plant pathology.
During his time with the Department, Dr. Jin has also contributed significantly to graduate education and training the next generation of plant pathologists. Building on this history of impact on graduate education, Jin donated proceeds from his 2013 Siehl Prize for Excellence in Agriculture to the Department of Plant Pathology in support of the education of international graduate students.
Dr. Jin’s generous gift ensures that the Department of Plant Pathology will remain a global leader in training global leaders in our field. We extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Jin for his generosity and continued leadership in graduate education.
