Goss's wilt and leaf blight is an economically important bacterial disease of corn caused by Clavibacter nebraskensis, which can cause up to 50% yield loss in susceptible varieties. New research by Molly Veregge, Cory Hirsch, Matthew Moscou, and Devanshi Khokhani et al. indicates that virulence in single-strain inoculations is not directly related to strain success in mixed inoculations of Clavibacter nebraskensis.
This study investigated 41 strains of the bacteria using high-throughput sequencing technologies, and further explored a subset of 13 to examine among-strain interactions, gaining insights into pathogen ecology and genomic features that are associated with virulence versus reproductive fitness in the plant.
