I am particularly interested in the complex microbial interactions with higher organisms in pathological and symbiotic relationships. For my master's and Ph.D. thesis, I focused on elucidating the structural biology and transcriptome profile of multicellular infection structures of the phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium graminearum and monitored the fungal mycotoxin induction during infection of wheat florets, using 3D bioimaging, electron microscopy (EM), laser microdissection, and RNASeq. As a Researcher 7 at the University of Minnesota, I performed subcellular localization studies of enzymes of the fungal mycotoxin biosynthesis and other metabolic pathways and explored cellular and organellar dynamics of F. graminearum in vitro and in planta, applying superresolution microscopy, EM, and organellar proteomics.
