Research in my lab focuses on new and re-emerging pathogens causing disease in alfalfa and strategies to reduce damage from diseases. Two diseases of particular concern are bacterial stem blight, caused by Pseudomonas syringae and P. viridiflava, and Aphanomyces root rot. We are investigating the genes involved in pathogenicity as well as genes for resistance. We use genome sequencing, comparative genomics, and transcriptomics to gain a better understanding of plant-pathogen interactions. Aphanomyces root rot is part of a complex of diseases that reduces alfalfa establishment and we are testing different strategies to improve establishment including fungicides, biological treatments, and developing enhanced disease resistance. In collaborative research we are investigating the diversity of microbial populations associated with alfalfa roots and their roles in promoting plant growth and inhibiting pathogens.
